BENAA constructed an eco-classroom in El-Fayoum using plastic bottles and clay as part of UNESCO’s Trash Hack Campaign, overcoming challenges like material scarcity and durability concerns by collaborating closely with the local community. The project, which evolved into a vibrant learning hub and playground, engaged residents, especially children, in construction and education, fostering environmental awareness and innovative architecture. Supported by volunteers and local wisdom, BENAA’s initiative aligns with UNESCO’s ESD for 2030 goals, promoting youth empowerment, eco-friendly learning spaces, and community-driven sustainability. Today, it stands as a model of resilience, education, and grassroots transformation in Egypt.
The amount of up-cycled materials is 130 m3, +300 direct kid benefit, and +10 trained labor.
Location: Izbet Ishaq Al-fayoum.
Partner: UNESCO
The Eco-Classroom has been awarded the Holcim Award Acknowledgement Prize for Middle East and Africa
